To Have and Have Not is based on an unsuccessful Hemingway novel – and one drunken afternoon in Florida, Hemingway had said to Hawks, “I bet you can’t make a movie from my worst novel!” Hawks, always a gambler, said, “You’re on.”
The only film to date based on a novel by a Nobel Prize-winning author (Ernest Hemingway) to have its screenplay co-written by another Nobel Prize-winning author (William Faulkner).

…Πίσω από το θόρυβο των μηχανών και το δυνατό χτύπημα του καϊκιού μέσα στο νερό άκουγε ένα παράξενο, υπόκωφο τραγούδισμα μέσα στην καρδιά του. Έτσι ένιωθε κάθε φορά που γύριζε σπίτι μετά από ένα ταξίδι. Ελπίζω να το γιατρέψουν το χέρι μου, σκέφτηκε. Έχω πολλά να κάνω μ’ αυτό… «Στο διάολο το χέρι μου! Ένα χέρι είναι ένα χέρι. Υπάρχουν χειρότερα πράγματα από το να χάσεις το χέρι σου. Έχεις δυο χέρια και δυο από τ’ άλλα. Ο άντρας είναι άντρας και με ένα χέρι, ακόμα και με ένα από τ΄άλλα. Δεν πάει στο διάολο!»…

Lauren Bacall – How little we know  

Lauren Bacall made her acting debut on Broadway in 1942, at age 17, as a walk-on in Johnny 2 X 4. By then, she lived with her mother on Bank Street, Greenwich Village, and in 1942 she was crowned Miss Greenwich Village. As a teenage fashion model she appeared on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar.

The Harper’s Bazaar, March 1943 cover caught the attention of Hollywood producer and director Howard Hawks’ wife Slim, who urged Hawks to have Bacall take a screen test for To Have and Have Not. Hawks asked his secretary to find out more about her, but the secretary misunderstood and sent Bacall a ticket to come to Hollywood for the audition.

At Hawks’ suggestion, Bacall was also trained to make her voice lower and deeper, as she naturally had a high-pitched, nasal voice. Hawks had her, under the tutelage of a voice coach, lower the pitch of her voice. As part of her training, she was required to shout verses of Shakespeare for hours every day.
