Pere Torné Esquius (1879–1936) was a singular Catalan painter and illustrator, celebrated as the “Painter of Interiors” for his evocative, human-free domestic scenes.
Born in Barcelona (1879), he studied at the Llotja School of Fine Arts, where he was a contemporary of Pablo Picasso. He moved to Paris in 1905, where he gained popularity as an illustrator for satirical magazines like Le Rire and participated in the Salon d’Automne. He famously earned his living in France as an illustrator while maintaining his reputation in Catalonia as a painter, returning annually to Barcelona to exhibit his work.
