Harue Koga was a visionary painter who redefined modern Japanese art. By blending European movements like Surrealism and Cubism with the realities of a rapidly industrializing Japan, he became a leading figure of the 1920s avant-garde. Though his life was short, his innovative ‘painted photomontage’ technique left a lasting mark on art history.

While European surrealists focused on dreams and the unconscious mind, Harue Koga and his Japanese contemporaries rejected blind imitation of the West. They accused André Breton’s Parisian movement of being ‘decadent’ and detached from reality. In response, Koga championed a ‘Scientific and Mechanistic Surrealism,’ arguing that the modern, industrial world itself was inherently surreal.

Though heavily criticized by Marxist ‘Proletarian’ artists for practicing ‘pure art,’ Koga’s visionary approach was deeply admired by avant-garde writers, including his close friend and future Nobel laureate, Yasunari Kawabata.
